The Fading Jewel of the Arabian Sea
A cluster of 36 pristine islands in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep is India’s smallest Union Territory—a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Yet, for its 60,000 islanders across 11 inhabited islands, life revolves around fishing and coconut farming, with alkaline, low-fertility soils limiting local food production.
Almost everything—from fruits to construction materials—must be imported from the mainland, but poor connectivity makes it a constant struggle. Even a simple hairpin must be shipped in!
Many rely on a single desalination plant for drinking water, while diesel remains the sole power source. Meanwhile, coastal erosion and ecological challenges continue to threaten this delicate ecosystem, reminding islanders daily of the fragility of their resources.
